A loving dance about identity and existence at the cellular level
In Transplantation we get to experience choreography, standup, opera, music, comedy and drama – with inspiration from bone marrow transplantation, love stories and Wagner. Together with the dancer Sofia Södergård, as drag king, Engelkes has created a performance about identity, existence, life and death. The personal story is at the centre. One woman carries a Y chromosome after a bone marrow transplant. The other woman carries a drag king identity. They ask themselves: Where do I end and where does the other begin? To undergo a transplant is an act of love from both sides. To give fully of oneself, of one’s blood to save someone’s life. An act of trust and love. For Engelkes, who has explored and interpreted Wagner’s operas in several of her own works, the connection to the story of Tristan and Isolde is obvious. Their love make them dissolve into each other. Transplantation is a dramatic, choreographic and humorous work – a variety about love for the other, for oneself and for life.

Charlotte Engelkes is national and internationally active as director, choreographer and artist. Her repertoire covers dance, theater, opera and performance. Characterized by an unrestrained genre mix, a personal appeal, a warm humor and surprising conclusions. Södergård, like Engelkes, has in many ways moved forward the positions in Swedish performing arts for how we look at norms and identity.
